The 4 times table

Recall the 4 times table (4×1 to 4×10) by doubling twice.

≈ 4 min · Difficulty 2/5

Real-life hook

A car has 4 wheels. How many wheels on 6 cars? 4 × 6 = 24 — and there's a neat way to get it: double, then double again.

See it

4 rows of 6 = 24

The idea

Multiplying by 4 is doubling twice. To find 4 × 6, double 6 to get 12, then double 12 to get 24.

Worked examples

4 × 6 = 24

  1. Double 6 → 12.
  2. Double 12 → 24.

4 × 7 = 28

  1. Double 7 → 14.
  2. Double 14 → 28.

Common mistake

Watch out: Doubling only once and stopping, e.g. 4 × 6 = 12.

Better: Double twice: 6 → 12 → 24.

Use it in real life

Four cans per pack, 6 packs: 4 × 6 = 24 cans.
