The 6 times table

Recall the 6 times table (6×1 to 6×10) using ×5 plus one more group.

≈ 4 min · Difficulty 3/5

Real-life hook

A six-pack holds 6 drinks. How many in 4 packs? 6 × 4 = 24. If you know your 5 times table, you're almost there already.

See it

6 rows of 4 = 24

The idea

Build ×6 from ×5: 6 × a number is 5 × the number, plus one more group. 6 × 4 = (5 × 4) + 4 = 20 + 4 = 24.

Worked examples

6 × 4 = 24

  1. 5 × 4 = 20.
  2. Add one more 4: 24.

6 × 7 = 42

  1. 5 × 7 = 35.
  2. Add one more 7: 42.

Common mistake

Watch out: Forgetting to add the extra group after ×5.

Better: ×6 = ×5 then add one more group: 6 × 7 = 35 + 7 = 42.

Use it in real life

Six eggs per row, 4 rows in the tray: 6 × 4 = 24 eggs.
